Have You Heard of the “Stupid Driver” Law?

In Arizona, there’s a law against…well…being stupid. The “Stupid Driver” Law was originally enacted to protect insurance companies from claims that resulted in individuals’ stupidity. For example, if you leave your keys in your car, and it is stolen, in Arizona, the insurance company doesn’t have to replace the car. Makes sense, doesn’t it? Now the law has been expanded to cover other kinds of stupidity—and lawmakers across the country are discussing similar versions for their own states. Here’s a true story: an Arizona woman who drove past a police barrier and into a flash flood not only couldn’t collect insurance damages on the car, but also may have to pay a fine of $2000 to her town for their expenses incurred while rescuing her. We’ve all seen drivers doing stupid things—in addition to tailgating or talking on handheld cell phones, how about applying makeup, reading the newspaper, or eating a Big Mac while driving with one’s elbows?
